When extraction is right

When removing a tooth is the right call

Nobody wants to lose a tooth — and at Adel Dentistry, extraction is always a last resort. Our conservative philosophy means we do everything reasonable to save your natural teeth first. But sometimes removal is genuinely the healthiest option, and delaying it only leads to more pain and bigger problems.

Common reasons a tooth may need to be extracted include:

  • Severe decay that has destroyed too much tooth structure to repair with a filling or crown;
  • A broken tooth that can’t be predictably restored;
  • Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth beyond saving;
  • Overcrowding, where removing a tooth creates the space needed for healthy alignment;
  • Preparation for a denture or implant treatment plan, where a non-restorable tooth needs to come out first.

If you’re dealing with a painful or damaged tooth in Carrollwood or anywhere across North Tampa, the first step is an exam and digital x-ray so Dr. Mustafa Adel can give you an honest assessment — including whether the tooth can still be saved.

Comfort-first care

A comfort-first approach to extractions

Tooth extraction has an intimidating reputation, but a straightforward extraction is often quicker and more comfortable than patients expect. Here’s how we keep it that way:

  • Profound numbing first — we make sure the area is completely numb before anything begins, you should feel pressure, not pain;
  • Unrushed appointments — we’re a private, single-doctor practice, Dr. Adel takes the time needed to work gently and carefully, never rushed, never an assembly line;
  • Clear communication — you’ll know what’s happening at each step, and you can raise a hand to pause at any time.

Most simple extractions take only a matter of minutes once the area is numb, and many patients tell us afterward it was far easier than they feared.

Your visit

What to expect on the day

Your visit starts with an exam and digital imaging to confirm the plan. Once the area is fully numb, Dr. Adel gently loosens the tooth and removes it — for most straightforward cases, this is quick and uneventful. You’ll bite on gauze to help a clot form, and we’ll go over aftercare instructions in detail before you leave.

Because extractions here are done with local anesthetic, most patients drive themselves home and return to light activities the same day. We’ll let you know exactly what to expect based on your specific case.

Wisdom teeth

What about wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the most common source of extraction questions — and yes, we handle them right here in our office. If yours are causing pain, crowding, or repeated infections, we’ll evaluate them with digital imaging, including a panoramic x-ray, and Dr. Adel will recommend the right next step. Most wisdom teeth can be removed comfortably in our office; in the rare case of a complex impaction, we’ll tell you honestly and coordinate your referral. Either way, you get a clear plan and a single team from evaluation through recovery — no bouncing between offices.

Recovery

Healing and aftercare

Good aftercare is what makes healing smooth. The essentials:

  • Keep gentle pressure on the gauze for the first 30–45 minutes to help a stable clot form;
  • Rest the day of treatment, avoiding strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours;
  • Eat soft foods — yogurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies (with a spoon, not a straw);
  • Don’t use straws, smoke, or spit forcefully for several days — the suction can dislodge the clot and cause a painful dry socket;
  • Use a cold compress on the cheek in 15-minute intervals to manage swelling;
  • Manage soreness as directed — it’s typically mild and responds well to over-the-counter pain relief.

Call us at (813) 964-8585 if you notice bleeding that won’t stop with pressure, pain that worsens after two to three days instead of improving, swelling that increases, or fever — these warrant a prompt follow-up.

What’s next

Replacing the tooth afterward

Unless it’s a wisdom tooth, an extracted tooth usually should be replaced. An empty gap lets neighboring teeth drift, affects your bite, and allows the jawbone underneath to shrink over time. Depending on your situation, Dr. Adel may recommend a dental implant (the closest replacement to a natural tooth), a bridge, or a partial denture. We’ll discuss your replacement options — and their costs — before anything is scheduled, so you can make the decision that’s right for you.

Replacing a tooth? Dental implants are the closest match to natural.

How much does a tooth extraction cost?

Cost depends on the tooth’s position, the complexity of the case, and whether replacement (such as an implant or bridge) is part of your plan. At your exam, we’ll give you clear, upfront pricing before anything is scheduled — including the full picture if a replacement tooth is recommended. We accept most PPO dental insurance plans, and our in-house membership plan offers an option for patients without insurance.

Questions

Tooth extraction FAQs

The area is fully numbed before we begin, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Most patients are surprised by how quick and comfortable a straightforward extraction is. Any post-visit soreness is typically mild and manageable.

The socket itself usually closes over within one to two weeks, with deeper healing continuing over the following weeks. Most people feel back to normal within a few days when they follow aftercare instructions.

Stick to soft foods for the first few days — yogurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, pasta, smoothies eaten with a spoon. Avoid anything hot, crunchy, or chewy at first, and don’t use a straw.

Dry socket happens when the protective blood clot is lost too early, exposing the bone underneath. Avoid straws, smoking, and forceful spitting for several days, and follow your aftercare instructions closely.

Most patients return to desk work or school the next day. If your job involves heavy physical labor, give it an extra day or two of rest.

Extractions at our practice are done with local anesthetic, so most patients drive themselves. We’ll confirm what’s right for your specific case at your visit.
