Signs you might need a root canal

You can’t diagnose this at home — only an exam with digital x-rays can confirm — but these are the classic warning signs:

Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold that hangs on long after the stimulus is gone;
Severe, spontaneous tooth pain — especially pain that wakes you up at night;
Pain when biting or chewing, or tenderness when the tooth is touched;
Swollen or tender gums around a specific tooth;
A small pimple-like bump on the gum near the tooth (a sign of infection draining);
Darkening or discoloration of the tooth.

Root canals don’t deserve their reputation

Let’s address the elephant in the room: root canals have a scary reputation left over from decades ago. Modern root canal therapy, done with effective local anesthesia and precise digital imaging, is typically no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. Most of our patients’ pain comes from the infection before treatment — the root canal itself is what finally brings relief. Adel Dentistry is not a regular dental office. What to expect during treatment

Diagnosis: We confirm the problem with an exam and digital x-rays, explain exactly what’s going on, and walk you through the plan and cost — with no pressure.
Comfort first: The tooth and surrounding area are thoroughly numbed. You’ll feel pressure, not pain.
Cleaning the canals: Dr. Adel creates a small opening in the crown of the tooth, removes the infected pulp, and carefully cleans, shapes, and disinfects the root canals.
Sealing and protection: The canals are filled and sealed. In most cases, the tooth then needs a crown to protect it and restore full strength — and with our in-office same-day crowns, that final restoration can often be completed without a second round of appointments.

Many root canals are completed in a single visit. More complex cases may need a follow-up, and we’ll tell you upfront what to expect.

After your root canal

Mild soreness for a day or two is normal and usually responds well to over-the-counter pain relief. Until your permanent crown is placed, avoid chewing hard foods on that side. Once crowned and with good oral hygiene — brushing, flossing, and regular checkups — a root-canal-treated tooth can last many years, often decades. Keep up with your professional cleanings so we can monitor the tooth and catch any change early. Root canal vs. extraction — which is better?

Whenever the tooth can be predictably saved, keeping it is almost always the better choice. Your natural tooth preserves your bite, your jawbone, and the alignment of neighboring teeth — and you avoid the cost and process of replacing it with an implant, bridge, or denture. Extraction has its place (see our tooth extractions page), but it’s the option we turn to when saving the tooth isn’t possible, not the first resort.

Can a root canal fail?

Root canals have a high success rate, and most treated teeth last for many years. This is one reason we protect root-canal-treated teeth with crowns and monitor them at your regular checkups: catching any issue early keeps your options open.
