Overview

Your jaw pain has a cause — let’s find it

Jaw clicking, morning headaches, a sore jaw, pain when chewing — these aren’t things you just live with. They often trace back to your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or the muscles around it, frequently driven by nighttime teeth grinding you don’t even know you’re doing. At Adel Dentistry, treatment starts with a thorough evaluation to find the actual cause — not a guess.

Symptoms

Signs your jaw joint needs attention

  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when you open or close your mouth
  • Jaw pain, stiffness, or a tired ache — especially in the morning
  • Frequent headaches, particularly on waking
  • Difficulty opening your mouth wide or a jaw that 'locks'
  • Worn, chipped, or flattened teeth (a telltale sign of grinding)
Treatment

How we treat TMJ disorders

Most TMJ problems improve with conservative care — no surgery. After evaluating your joint, bite, and muscles (and checking for grinding damage), Dr. Adel typically recommends a custom oral appliance: a precisely fitted night guard that keeps grinding from wrecking your joint and teeth while you sleep. We also address contributing habits and recheck your progress. If your case needs a specialist, we’ll tell you honestly — but most don’t.

Adel Dentistry is not a regular dental office. Dr. Mustafa Adel is an award-winning cosmetic dentist with hospital-level training: a General Practice Residency (GPR) at Saint Vincent Hospital in Cleveland covering advanced dentistry, trauma, surgery, and implants — plus a Fellowship in implants from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI).

FAQ

TMJ FAQs

Straight answers about jaw pain, grinding, and TMJ treatment.

TMJ is your temporomandibular joint (where your jaw meets your skull); TMD is the term for disorders of that joint and surrounding muscles — pain, clicking, stiffness, and related headaches.

The most common culprits: nighttime teeth grinding and clenching, a misaligned bite, jaw injury, and arthritis. Our evaluation identifies which factors are driving yours.

Conservatively: a thorough evaluation, then typically a custom-fitted oral appliance (night guard) to stop grinding damage, plus guidance on habits that aggravate the joint. We monitor your progress at follow-ups.

Very unlikely. The vast majority of TMJ cases improve with conservative treatment. Surgery is a last resort we don’t recommend lightly — and most patients never need it.

Significantly. A custom guard is fitted precisely to your bite, so it actually protects your joint instead of just sitting between your teeth — and it lasts far longer.

Morning headaches paired with a sore jaw or worn teeth very often point to nighttime clenching. An evaluation gives you a real answer instead of another bottle of painkillers.
