Porcelain veneers are one of the most requested cosmetic treatments at our private Carrollwood practice, and one of the most common questions we hear is a fair one: how long will they actually last? The honest answer is that high quality porcelain veneers, cared for properly, routinely last between ten and twenty years, and in many cases considerably longer.
Three things matter most. The first is the quality of the porcelain and the skill of the ceramist who handcrafts it. The second is how conservatively the veneers are prepared and bonded to your natural teeth. The third, and arguably the most important over the long term, is how you care for them day to day.
At our practice we follow a deliberately conservative philosophy. The less natural tooth structure we remove during preparation, the stronger the underlying tooth remains and the more durable the final result tends to be. Aggressive preparation can compromise a tooth and shorten the lifespan of any restoration placed over it.
This is one of the reasons we take time during the planning phase to design veneers that enhance your smile while preserving as much of your own enamel as possible.
Veneers are not maintenance free, but caring for them is straightforward. Brush and floss as you would natural teeth, avoid using your teeth as tools, and be mindful of habits like nail biting or chewing ice. If you grind your teeth at night, a custom night guard is a worthwhile investment that protects both your veneers and your natural teeth.
Regular professional visits allow us to monitor the margins of your veneers and catch any small issues early, long before they become problems.
We think of veneers as the beginning of a long term relationship rather than a one time procedure. With thoughtful design, conservative technique and consistent care, your veneers should remain beautiful and functional for many years. If you are considering veneers in Carrollwood or the greater Tampa area, we would be glad to discuss what a natural, lasting result could look like for you.
